Butchers To Work; Dispute Unsettled
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 22. Butchers at the South Otago Freezing Company’s Finegand works will resume work tomorrow after being on strike since last Wednesday afternoon.
However, the dispute, brought about by the introduction of a new dressing cut on the mutton slaughter chain, has not been settled and will be referred to the national disputes committee for a decision, according to the general manager of the company, Mr A. C. Stewart. After a meeting of chain
slaughtermen in the Balclutha War Memorial Hall today, attended by the national president of the Freezing Workers’ Union (Mr B. A. Manson), the agreement was reached to return to work and refer the dispute to the national committee. Mr Stewart said that it was hoped to get a meeting of the committee in Balclutha within a week. Mr N. E. Gallagher, the slaughtermen’s representative, declined to make any statement after today’s meeting.
