EDUCATION DEBATED
Requirements For Nursing (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Jan. 22. There was disagreement about the standard of education which should be required for girls who want to train as nurses among members of the Cook Hospital Board today. The Mayor (Mr H. H. Barker) said that he had read recently that more passes in general nurse training were being achieved by girls who did not have their school certificate, than by those who had it. Mr F. J. G. Butler said that there were some board members who would not agree with Mr Barker and he would like to refute any sugger on that a school certificate was not necessary for a nurse who was about to start her training. The chairman of the board (Mr J. B. Williams) said that he understood that some city hospitals were considering raising the standa-d to university entrance examination. Mr R. A. White said that to lower the standard required for nurse training would be a retrograde step. The board took no action.
