Memorial Avenue
Sir,—ln your paper of October 10 there appeared a most unsatisfactory and evasive reply from the chairman of the Waimairi County Council regarding Memorial Avenue shopping mall. Your correspondent raised some very real questions, and it would seem thft the county council is quite prepared to dishonour undertakings given regarding Memorial Avenue simply for the sake of its own convenience, namely, the relocation of shops. How can any citizen or ratepayer have faith in
the council when it changes its zoning from Residential A or goes back on the solemn undertaking made to other local bodies and citizens when forming Memorial Avenue? Cr Rich points out that the council has not consented to the shopping mall but simply supports a specified departure. That would appear to the average ratepayer a twisting of the truth. Even if Otara Street or Hamilton Avenue is required for an additional entrance, the traffic problem will not be eased but in fact increased, as both streets are narrow.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED RATEPAYER. November 13, 1967. [The chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Cr D. B. Rich) comments: “The assertion that the council is quite prepared to dishonour undertakings given in respect of Memorial Avenue is not correct, and the twisting of the truth’ is an unfair and untrue reflection on the council. If your correspondent desires to discuss the matter, I suggest that he contact the county office, or me personally.”] [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed, "The Press.”]
