Dyers Road Speed Limit

Sir,—R. Potts writes that “the City Council is unable to enforce its own by-laws regarding the 30 m.p.h. speed limit.” This is quite true, because changing conditions since this 30-year-old law was enacted have rendered it unrealistic, and so often unobserved once away from city centres. This is shown by the recent daily convictions in Christchurch: 73, 50, 83, and 88 prosecutions for breaches of this arbitrary speed limit. Pure speed is by no means always the cause of accidents; congestion caused by slow obstructive driving is very often responsible. Twenty m.p.h. can often be more dangerous in some areas than 40 m.p.h. in others.—Yours, etc., SETH NEWELL. December 1, 1967.
