Tunnel Truck Speeds

Sir, —I am a truck driver, doing up to six return trips through the tunnel daily, as well as going to and from work in my car. The statement made by Mr Witbrock that the grade in the tunnel can be taken in top gear I agree with in part. This would be so if one had a straight run beforehand to build up speed, but not after a steep climb from port to the tunnel portal. As for vehicles pulling the trailers which are beyond the capacity of their engines, I am sure the manufacturers would love to take Mr Collett to task on that! The idea behind these trailers is to move the cargo quicker, enabling ships to turn round faster. Surely this is a good thing. It seems that while the public are behind these slow-moving vehicles it is all right, but as soon as it is a member of the Tunnel Authority something must be done!—Yours, etc., DRIVER.
