NINE MEN DISMISSED
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Nov. 5.
A reduction in timber orders from the east coast has meant that the Karamea sawmill of Stuart and Chapman, Ltd, has had to put off nine men.
The company, a subsidiary of the Fletcher group, recently opened a modern mill at Ruatapu, near Hokitika, and this has a capacity equal to the entire production of mills in Buller. It is thought that the new mill’s siting and its high production potential make its timber more economical for east coast buyers. It is not known how long the cut-back will last. The men hope to find work with the Forest Service.
