More Than Fireworks

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 5. An explosion which shattered part of a public lavatory at the Blockhouse Bay reserve in Auckland on Saturday night is thought to have been caused by gelignite. The explosion capped an evening of Guy Fawkes revelry on the beach by a group of about 20 youths and came an hour after a smaller explosion which ripped a hole in a willow tree in the reserve. In Dunedin, someone detonated a stick of gelignite about 10.25 p.m. on Saturday at the Bishopscourt sports grounds, "shaking nearby houses and leaving a 2ft deep crater. In Wellington there were more than 50 fires, most of them gorse fires started by fireworks, and the Wellington Fire Brigade had its busiest week-end in years.

At Lower Hutt a spent roeket started a blaze in the hills about 7 p.m. on Saturday which was not put out until 1 p.m. today.
