British Flat Season Ends (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. A record total of £256.899 by Newmarket trainer Noel Murless highlighted the 1967 British flat racing season which ended on Saturday. Not since the retirement of the late Fred Darling has one stable so dominated a season’s racing. Among the top prizes won by Murless-trained horses were the 2000 Guineas and Derby (with Royal Palace), the 1000 Guineas (with Fleet), and the Eclipse Stakes, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (with Busted). In winning the trainers’ title for the sixth time, Murless beat by more than £lOO,OOO the previous British record he set himself in 1959.

The jockey’s championship was a triumph for Lester Piggott, who won his fifth title with 117 victories.

Mr J. Joel, 72-year-old South African gold mining and diamond magnate, headed the winning owners’ list. The 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby victories of his colt, Royal Palace, helped Mr Joel with a total of £120,924 in stakes.

It was the first time he had been leading owner—an overdue reward for a lifelong patron of the turf, whose luck hitherto had never matched his enthusiasm

The champion sire for the first time was Ballymoss. which owed his title to the merits of Royal Palace.

Ribot, the sire of Ribocco, was a close second.
