MOTZ TAKES 15 WICKETS

First day: Riccarton 284; East-Shirley 135 and 1 for no wicket. Burwood Park is a ground which will not easily be forgotten by the New Zealand and Canterbury fast bowler, R. C. Motz. His 7 wickets for 65 in East-Shirley's second innings gave him a match aggregate of 15 wickets for 111 runs and this, together with a score of 128 in the Riccarton first innings, makes his a performance of rare quality. Shortly before lunch, Motz ripped the East-Shirley second innings apart with a devastating spell of nve overs in which he took five wickets for 11 runs. Motz had opened the innings bowling with the wind and al though he found the green pitch rather unresponsive, man aged to move the ball away quite sharply. His only success then was a dropped catch at leg-slip but in

his fifth over he changed to bowling into the strong south erly wind, and from a short run. He had immediate success and from one for 7J EastShirley slumped to six for 91. C. L. Broad and D. W. Siead. ttie other successful Riccarton bowlers bowled capably. Stead in particular flighted his legbreaks well but all the bowlers suffered in the early stages from some rather indifferent fielding and catching. As has so often nsppened in the past. East Snirley began Afll only to see the innings collapse. J. W. Grocott and G. Tait gave their side a good start. Tait in particular look ing quite confident, although inclined at times to hit across the I’ne. G. I*. V Pulley was another who batted capably and P. i Coman at the end had the satljfsction of making Riccar ton bat again. Umpires: Mews B. R. Goodall and B. Denniscn.
