Old Collegians Batting Fails
First day: Old Collegians 174; Old Boys 180/7. Some indifferent batting by Old Collegians in their second innings when they were dismissed for 128 gave Old Boys the apparently easy task of scoring 76 runs for victory. But the Old Collegians bowling was more resolute than its batting and Old Boys, although scoring the- runs for five wickets, had to fight hard against a very keen combination of N. F. Curtis and M. G. Lester.
B. G. Hadlee was the only Old Boys' batsman to show much confidence against Curtis and Lester and his 47 not out played a major part in his team’s victory. Old Boys batted stolidly for
another 47 runs in the morning before declaring 53 runs ahead of Old Collegians. From the outset of their second innfngs, the Old Collegians batsmen were not very confident. J. S. Baxter was missed twice in his brief innings and D. S. Banks, who has been a steady scorer so far this season, failed to make his usual sound contribution. There was some brief resistance from J. D. Riley and M. G. Lester and some aggressive driving from H. J. Taylor, who batted attractively for 48, but the total of 128 had made the game safe for Old Boys. Bowling his off-spinners at a brisk pace, V. Bishop took four wickets for 30 runs and his sharp turn troubled all of the batsmen. G. R. Saunders took three wickets cheaply and W. M. Duncan had some hostile opening overs. Umpires: Messrs W. P. C. Prosser and R. W. Hobbs.
