Cup Day Triumph For N.I.

The entry of 42 North Island horses at Riccarton on Saturday for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting was a big attraction. At the end of the day there were some happy North Island owners, trainers and jockeys because all eight races were won by North Island horses.

A crowd of 11,295, about 500 more than last year, packed the stands to see the cup race. Early in the day the weather was cold, but the sun broke through before the big race, and the commentator (Mr D. B. Clarkson) was able to tell listeners throughout New Zealand in Australia and in the Pacific Islands that Riccarton had sunshine. For many betters the result of the race was a disappointment, because the warm favourite. Fans, was beaten by I Laramie, the fourth favourite,

but they could not have been disappointed in the spectacle or in the winner’s performance. Laramie has raced well in the North Island and his first visit to the South Island has added 86500 to his winnings and given his Auckland owner, Mrs J. F. Hughes, a handsome gold cup. A six-year-old chestnut gelding, Laramie is by Blueskin 11-Best Offer, and was bred by H. J. Waller of Awapuni, who sold him to Mrs Hughes and who trains him for her. Two Wins The race gave the Palmerston North jockey, L. K. Tinsley his first New Zealand Cup victory, sufficient reminder of Riccarton, 1967, in the years ahead; but he had other cause for jubilation. He won the New Zealand Derby Stakes, the race before the cup, on Jazz. Owners and trainers throughout the country had supported the meeting, and the club was grateful to them, said the chairman (Mr D. W. J. Gould). It was also grateful to John Dewar and Sons Ltd, for presenting a cup e

valued at $6OO for the third year. “I thought all your good stayers had gone over for the Melbourne Cup,” said Mr H. F. Friday, general manager of the company for Australia and New Zealand, who came from Sydney to see the race and present the cup,” but I am glad to see you have kept

a few good stayers who turned on such a fine race.” Mrs Hughes confessed to being “overwhelmed” by Laramie’s success, and her speech was confined to thanks to her trainer and

jockey and the club. Laramie was credited with a time of 3min 21 l-ssec, the fastest since Serenata’s 3min 20 4-ssec in 1940, but the time surprised some who had taken their own and also some of the jockeys. Disappointed H. N. Rauhihi, who rode Fans, was the most disappointed man on the course, particularly as he had been beaten into second place on Tulson in the Derby. He had consolation later, winning the Hagley Handicap on Jane Blithe and in the last race rode the 10-year-old Baloo to h

victory in track record time of Imin 49 2-ssec for nine furlongs. Jazz is the first horse raced by Mr D.. H. Kay. To win any race was a great thrill, he said at the presentation. To win a Derby was a particular thrill. Jazz, one of the three fillies of the 11 three-year-olds in

the classic, was bought by Mr T. C. Lowry as a yearling for $2625. As he requires her for breeding he has leased her for her racing career to Mr Kay, who is secretary of the New Zealand Thoroughbred

Breeders’ Association, of which Mr Lowry is chairman. Her trainer, E. Temperton, of Awapuni, has twice been the most successful trainer in the country, but Jazz is his first Derby winner. The brilliant three-year-old filly. High Delight, won the Stewards’ with little effort, justifying her firm favouritism. She gave the combination of owners—Mr and Mrs A. E. Preston—and trainer—B. A. V. Preston, of Otaki—their second Stewards’ win, the other being in 1960 with Huka Falls.
