CLASH IN AUCKLAND
‘C.N.D. Not Involved’ The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament was not connected with an incident in Auckland in which a police inspector was thrown down a cliff face, the campaign’s secretary (Miss S. Smith) said yesterday. The Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) asked in Parliament last week if the Labour Party endorsed or repudiated the policy and actions of the campaign and of the “Communist-front” Progressive Youth Movement, which “only the other day was responsible for a police inspector being tossed down a cliff.” “The New Zealand C.N.D. has no knowledge of the Progressive Youth Movement, which is not an affiliate, nor has it knowledge of its policy and aims,” Miss Smith said. “The work of the N.Z.C.N.D. in educating public opinion to the nuclear danger has been acknowledged by cabinet ministers, notably by the Minister of Finance’s predecessor, the late Mr Lake, when addressing our Christchurch branch,” she said. Miss Smith has written to Mr Muldoon, asking for a retraction and an apology. i
