In spite of an aggressive 110 by G. Wright, Kirwee United had to be content with a draw when it met South Malvern in the first round of the Malvern cricket competition on Saturday. The surprise of the day was the defeat of last season’s championship winning side, Darfield, by the Darfield junior (under-23) team, a newcomer to the competition. P. Pettit, who is still at school, scored 90 for the junior side and he and D. Crombie put on 117 for the third wicket. Scores:— Darfield juniors 208/9 (P. Pettitt 90, D. Crombie 58; M. Maw 5/51, W. Paulin 3/68) beat Darfield 97 (R. Gunn 4/21), on the first innings. Hororata 113 (N. Rothwell 45; K. Howarth 5/22) lost to Sheffield 118/3 (G. Judd 44 not out), on the first innings. Kirwee United 233/7 dec. (G. Wright 110) drew with South Malvern 113/6 (R. Tilson 30 not out). Greendale had the bye. Banks Peninsula Three centuries were scored In the opening round of the Banks Peninsula competition. D. Masefield scored an aggressive 110 for Le Bon’s Bay, which easily beat Akaroa. In the match between Diamond Harbour and Wainui, S. Blakely scored 120 in quick time and T. Hutchinson played a solid innings of 133 out of the 189 reached by Wainui. In the other match, Kaiapol beat Fernside on the first innings. Good doubles by J Allen, 60 and 37. and R. Merrln, match figures of eight for 38, were the best performances. Scores: Kaiapol 356/5 dec. beat Fernside 200 (J. Allen 60, N. Bowring 39: M. Capstick 3/36, J. Rodgers 3/53) and 56/1 (Allen 37), on the first Innings. Ohoka 176 and 85 (E. Bailey 35; I. Sail 3/9) lost outright to Ranglora 183/8 dec. (J. Hirat 49: E. Bailey 3/50) and 82/4 (G. Benney 33). Oxford 106 and 53 (R. Merrill 4/12, G. Creamer 3/14) lost outright to Woodefid, 218/9 dec. HURUNUI Cheviot and United-Waikarl shared the lead In the Hurunui competition after the first two rounds of one-day matches. Surprises were a feature of the matches on Saturday with last year’s champion. Culverden. being beaten by Walkarl, while in the other game Scargtll convincingly beat Unlted-Hawar-den. Waiau defaulted and has now withdrawn from the series. P. Rutherford was impressive again with a 50 and 79 not out for Hawarden. In four Innings. Rutherford has made 176 for twice out. Scores: Unlted-Wafkari 143 (A. P. Rapley 47. G. Lennon 40: J, Hamilton 3/30, T. Barber 3/36) beat Culverden 100 (Rapley 5/32) on the first innings. Scargill 170 (W. Mosley 56. R. Sincock 57; B.
