CROWD AT SEASON’S FIRST SHOW

Gate Takings Record For Ellesmere

Fine, mild weather provided, ideal conditions for the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show at Leeston on Saturday. A very large crowd attended, and gate takings, at $B9O, were $159 up on last year.

They also exceeded those of the previous best show, 1960, when a “gate” of £387 was obtained.

Judges commented on the forward appearance of the livestock entries, for this, the first show of the season.

Ring events were well supported by light horse and pony exhibitors, and a full programme of jumping events continued until sundown.

Friesians and Ayrshires attracted the largest entries in the dairy section. The Ayrshire judge (Mr L. H. Muirhead, of Invercargill), said the section was uniform, and he was pleased to see some young breeders competing. Mr Muirhead described the champion Ayrshire cow, C. H. Green’s Lochside Star Dust, as a beautiful Ayrshire, and fit to win any show. The panel of dairy judges subsequently selected her as the champion dairy cow of all breeds.

The show had a useful entry of beef cattie. A Hereford bull shown by 0. R. Chamberlain and Sons was selected by the judge (Mr W. H Brown, of Scargill) as the champion beef beast on the ground, and the bull duly led the cattle section in the grand parade. Mr I. D. Dodds, of Gore, Who judged the Friesians, said the standard, throughout, was fairly even. It was a good Showing of the breed, entries having been brought out in good order for this time of the year. The champion cow was Lesdale Hielo, shown by J J. and J. A. Geddes. An aged cow, she won a class of 15 entries, before being selected as the champion. The judges in the pig section complimented the Ellesmere association on the good judging facilities. The judge of the Landrace pigs (Mr G. S. Barwell) said there were some outstanding entries, especially the champion sow and boar. The entire entry was of high quality. There was only one apparent weakness—some of the pigs were inclined to be a little weak in the pasterns. However, the Landrace pigs were showing great improvement in the loins, and a pig like the champion boar, shown by T. S. Chappel, should further strengthen the breed. Mr Barwell, who also judged Tamworths, said the few entries brought forward, were good. It was disappointing, he said, to see this breed declining in numbers. No Berkshires were entered. Mr A. A. Mann, of Oarnaru, who judged the Large Whites, was pleased with the entries. The standard, generally, was high, and he made particular mention of the supreme champion sow owned by G. A. Lock. Some of the judges in the sheep section would like to have seen stronger competition. In the fat lamb section, the judge (Mr R. Parsons, of Amberley) said that although entries were not large, the quality was good, and pens had been well-matched.

In the following list of awards, the association pointed out that in classes where there were fewer than seven entries, the usual award of third placing had been replaced by highly commended (h.c.).
