McLaren Well Inside Monterey Record
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MONTEREY (California). B. McLaren, of New Zealand, his teammate D. Hulme, and nine other drivers, broke the old one-lap Laguna Seca track record in qualifications for the 200-mile sports car grand prix, which will be run today.
McLaren was the fastest qualifier at Imin 2.695ec, about 109 miles an hour.
Hulme, also of New Zealand, who is leading in the CanadianAmerican Challenge Cup series with 27 points, was third fastest in Imin 3.2osec.
Between the New Zealanders was D. Gurney, of the United States, in Imin 3.losec.
The previous lap record was Imin s.3lsec, set in 1966 by J. Hall, of the United States, in a winged Chaparral. Hall was fourth fastest on Friday in Imin 3.935ec. M. Spence, of Maidenhead, England, was sixth best in Imin 4.725ec;
J. Surtees, the defending champion in theories, and the
Australian, F. Matich, both recorded Imin s.l7sec.
The Ferrari drivers, C. Amon, of New Zealand, and J. Williams, also qualified. The 201.7 mile race, worth about SUSI2,OOO to the winner, will be run in two 53Map legs. Heavily favoured to win will be the team of McLaren and Hulme. The 33-year-old Hulme has won all three races in the series. He has 27 points. McLaren is in second place with 12 points, and Surtees is third with seven.
Hulme could settle the series with a win or a strong finish today. There are only two races after the Monterey Grand irrix.
