Linwood School Crew Has Convincing Trophy Win

There were three highlights from a full week-end’s yachting in the best possible conditions. Linwood High School’s top crew, S. Smith and S. Dinmore, on Saturday inflicted a severe thrashing on the other school crews in the third heat of the Peter Mander Trophy for inter-school yachting.

The former champion, C. Papps, produced two superb performances in the 12ft catamaran, Sunbeam, to give him a four-win tally for the weekend (speed and handicap). And at the Waimakariri. O. Brown -took the first two races of the Moth class championships in bis new boat, Vicky.

Smith and Dinmore made no race for the inter-school trophy, winning by the huge margin (for a restricted class) ,of five minutes. This was a lesson in sailing that the others should not forget, for the winners were out of their class.

To see a 12ft, una rigged catamaran walking away from the 14ft Javelin on all sections of the course was something of a surprise on Saturday, but Papps also did the double by doing it again yesterday afternoon. In Saturday’s racing he mistook the course when leading by more than a minute, regained the lead, and was only 20sec ahead with the last beat

and lead to the line. He picked up more than a minute on the three-quarter mile slog, and finally finished two minutes and a half ahead.

Yesterday, he had to play second string to Giavellna right, up to the last lead, when he went tn front to win narrowly.

At the Waimakariri, Brown, with his new Moth hull, had instant success in winning the first two championship races from a high-class field. In both races the most promising junior. T. Blanchard, took second olactngs, while B. Kitson and B. McEwan had the R class Unique going very fast in their races.
