Flights To Antarctica
Four aircraft left Christchurch for the Antarctic yesterday. A fifth was delayed. It may go today. For three days a United States Navy Super Constellation had been .prevented from making the flight because of mechanical problems. A replacement Constellation should have left at 6 p.m. yesterday but it too was held back by a maintenance proolem.
A Royal New Zealand Air Force Hercules took off from Christchurch at 9.33 a.m. on its second flight to McMurdo Sound. On board were nine members of a relief party for Scott Base. The men should have gone down last Wednesday to assist with the air drop in the Wright Dry Valley where New Zealand’s newest base will be established. Later in the day three United States Navy VX6 Herculefleft for the Antarctic.
