Shell Found At Beach
While walking on the beach at South Brighton late yesterday afternoon a’ boy trod on a 3in Howitzer shell. He is William Ronald Stark, aged 15, of 12 Halsey Street, South Brighton. , He was accompanied by his sister, Teresa, aged 18, and her fiance, Colin O’Brien, of 235 Estuary Road. The round still had T.N.T. in it but was not fused.
The shell was partly hidden in grass on the sandhills at the end of Halsey Street. It was encrusted with barnacles and was fairly rusty. The New Brighton police were informed.
Captain E. D. Gerard, an Army ammunition technical officer, examined the shell and took charge of it. It will be exploded on the army demolition range at West Melton. The shell is of World War II vintage.
