LAKE ERIE TRAGEDY
No Hope Held
For Lost 14
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
HURON (Ohio), August 29. Coast Guard searchers say there is no chance of finding alive 14 parachutists missing after they accidentally leapt into Lake Erie.
The Coast Guard said they expected bodies to come to the surface in the next few days unless they were held down by parachute harness. The missing 14 were among 20 who jumped from a converted Second World War Liberator bomber at 20,000 feet on Sunday afternoon. Two landed safely, two others were rescued from the lake, and two bodies were recovered. The Federal Aviation Agency has ordered an investigation into why the parachutists’ plane was apparently off course.
