WOMAN GAOLED
‘Cruel Beating’ Of Boy
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, July 3.
A woman who police said last week had thrashed a six-year-old boy with a stick of firewood, was today sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, by Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M. He added 12 months’ probation to the sentence.
Imposing the sentence on Mary Nooapii, a 31-year-old factory hand, the Magistrate said it should serve as a deterrent to others who were prepared to give way to temper. “The law will step in if their consciences do not,” he said. He described the incident as a cruel beating and said the accused had delayed the calling of medical treatment for the boy inexcusable. He noted that the boy might have a permanent disability of sorts as a result of the beating. Nooapii had pleaded guilty.
