Helicopter To Join Crayfishing Fleet
A helicopter from Wanganui will be used in the Chatham Islands in coming weeks to fly crayfish from fishing boats to the island cool store.
This will permit the fishing boats to remain at sea for longer periods. Helicopters are now being used in the fishing industry off certain parts of the North Island. The helicopter, a Hiller UHI2 owned by Alexander
Helicopters, Ltd., of Wanganui, will be part of the deck cargo of the Holmburn, which will sail from Lyttelton to the Chathams tomorrow. The helicopter will be flown from Christchurch airport to joia the ship today. The Holmburn will also carry as deck cargo a launch and a 30,000 gallon fuel storage tank. The tank has been waiting for shipment since January. It was delayed pending a site decision. The ship will also take the island’s first steam boiler and two big electric generating sets for the Chatham Islands Meat Company’s new frozen meat plant and some 61ft piles for the Chathams wharf. The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) will be among the ship’s 12 passengers.
