NORTHERN MOTORWAY
“No Houses Rought”
The Ministry of Works had not bought any houses on the proposed route of the northern motorway, the District Civil Engineer (Mr D. A. Lane) said yesterday.
He said there was a limited amount available for the purchase of houses but this would only be used where there were proven cases of great hardship. Money now available was needed for other urgent works and could not be used for buying houses unless it was absolutely necessary to do so. Mr Lane said anyone wanting to sell a house on the motorway route should first approach the Christchurch City Council. In Parliament on Wednesday Mr H. J. Walker (Nat., St. Albans) claimed that people on the motorway route could not sell their houses and some were unable to accept employment transfers for this reason.
Happy To Leave.—The British actor Michael Crawford sailed for England and a holiday yesterday, saying he was happy to have completed his contract in “Black Comedy” because of the physical beating he took while starring in the Broadway hit. —New York, June 29.
