Prevalence Of Colds

Common colds, acute bronchitis, and pneumonia were prevalent from April 23 to May 14, according to a report from the research committee of the Canterbury faculty of the College of General Practitioners. There were increases in cases of mumps, muscular rheumatism, and nervous viral infections, but the over-all number of cases reported decreased by 48 to 1197 from 1245 for the previous four weeks. The large increase in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting reported last month had decreased slightly but the complaint was still prevalent. The report said the epidemic had almost settled. It was mild, lasting one to three days and affecting all ages. Two children were admitted to hospital. Chickenpox decreased from 67 in the previous month to 39 in the last, staphylococcal infections increased in adults and children, and there were 26 cases of muscular rheumatism last month against three for the month before. Returns were received from 65 doctors.
