General News

“Kind Regards” Sir Robert Menzies was on one occasion Prime Minister of Australia and Acting Minister of Finance, said the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr R. E. Smith) at a luncheon yesterday in honour of Sir Robert Menzies. He wrote a letter to himself, and added at the bottom, “Kind regards.” Mr Smith also quoted Sir Robert Menzies as once saying: “We are all argumentative, except New Zealanders, who of course take it for granted that you will agree with them anyway.” Plants Regenerated Ministry of Works officials in Otematata have observed a regeneration of native plants around the shoreline of Lake Benmore, which was created behind the new dam in the Waitaki Valley two years and a half ago. The lake has brought moisture to the previously dry and barren region. Regeneration is particularly noticeable in areas where a good degree of rabbit control has been achieved. Cold Weather It was cold in Christchurch for much of yesterday. From midnight on Wednesday until 10 a.m. yesterday the temperature never exceeded the thirties. By noon it had reached 43 degrees and by 3 p.m. 47 degrees. Generally winds were light, from a south to South-westerly direction. The sky varied between partly cloudy and clear. One of the coldest offices in the city yesterday was the headquarters of the Southern Military District, where the central heating system failed. The heating had not been restored by 5 pun. when staff left Traffic Check About 60 second-year geography students of the University of Canterbury made observations and random interviews in the Christchurch business area yesterday as a class exercise. They were studying the destination of motorists, length of stay in parking places, and general patterns of traffic. Findings will be analysed in class. The casual check will not be used for any other purpose.
