Smart Sprint By Belfie
"The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. A smart run by Belfie and Lisa was the highlight of the final trials at Wingatui for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting. Most of the work was done on the course proper, with the trestles out 42ft, although there was the odd gallop on the inside tracks. Overhead conditions were good and the track soft. Belfie (B. J. Anderton) appeared to be travelling better than Lisa (J. Brown) at the end of five furlongs in Imin 6 l-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 2-ssec. Lisa and Belfie are rivals in the Miss New Zealand Handicap, and both should run prominently. Combination (R. J. Pedger) was too good for Golden Supreme (F. A. Austin) over half a mile and led his stablemate by two lengths at the finish in 54sec. Watallan (A. K. Robinson) was going easily alongside Blue Seas (R. O. Cairns) after sprinting three furlongs in 41sec. Gay Gabador (E. J. Didham) and Pasowa (B. J. Gore) ran six furlongs in Imin 26sec. On the No. 1 grass, Pee Wee (J. R. Dowling) sprinted half a mile in 54 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 41 2-15 sec. Cimgold, which qualified as a hurdler in the North Island, jumped six fences. He dipped at a couple, but made a good recovery.
