High Standard At Bird Show

Record entries in almost all the classes represented at the centennial show held by the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Club, provided judges with a hard task at the Christchurch Fanciers’ Hall, Selwyn street, yesterday. Many of the entries, more particularly in the pigeon classes, were of international standard, judges said. In all sections the early time of year might have adversely affected some of the birds, mainly the older ones. The number of entries is the biggest since small cage birds were dropped from the show in 1962. Pigeons are the most strongly represented, 850 of them having been entered in 657 classes. Poultry entries number 321, bantams 290, and ducks 30. The fancy pigeon sections were decided by three Australian judges. The judge of the C.L.L.F. Tumblers (Mr J. Bentley) said that there were some very good quality birds exhibited, although some exhibitors had not displayed their birds to the best advantage. The best tumbler had all the qualities he was looking for, Mr Bentley said, and was spotless and in excellent condition. The tumbler was a young white cock exhibited by G. L. Clark. "The best of the birds exhibited in the section I judged would hold their own anywhere in the world today,” Mr Bentley said. "The coloured homing pigeons were excellent, and the two winning homers would more than hold their own in Australia,” said the judge of the coloured homing pigeons (Mr D. Littman). He said that the Jacobins were quite good, although some of the birds were not through the moult, the fantails were rather disappointing, but the winning Modenas were well up to his expectations. "There are some very good swallows exhibited, particularly the Silesian swallows, and the quality of the English owls is higher than that in Australia,” the judge of the other fancy pigeon classes (Mr J. de Brennie) said. The fancy pigeons he judged were not quite up to Australian standards. The judge of the light poultry classes and the ducks (Mr M. Ronald, of Dunedin) said that the White Leghorn cockerel exhibited by E. W. Tippins, which was judged the best light breed bird, was a splendid bird with lovely feather and in first-class condition. "It was quite a treat to see so many ducks in the show; it would seem that they are coming back into favour/’ he said. The show will continue today and tomorrow.
