More Births And Deaths There were more births and deaths registered in Christchurch last month than in May, last year, according to figures released by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Mr F. G. Elsmore) yesterday. Last months 495 births were registered, bringing the total for the year to 2423. At this time last year 2299 births had been registered. The number of deaths registered last month was 243, 17 more than in May last year, but the total for the year so far is 40 below the 1035 registered in the same period last year. Forty-five registry marriages were performed last month and 186 marriage notices were issued. In May, last year, 36 registry marriages were performed and 187 marriage notices issued. The total marriage notices issued so far this year (1122) is two more than the total at this time last year, but the total number of registry marriages (189) is 17 less than at this time last year.
