Government Importing
The Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association would write to the Government asking for more details of Government imports, said the director of the association (Mr R. T. Alston) yesterday. The association would also endeavour to ascertain whether some of the equipment could have been made in New Zealand. Mr Alston said that many New Zealand manufacturers were facing raw materials problems because of the cuts in import licensing. It was frustrating to observe that Government imports were one-third higher than they were in the previous year. “We feel there is a principle involved and that Government, as well as industry, should have a reduction in its imports,” said Mr Alston.
