Children In Smoking Compartments

Sir,—Replying to a corres-' pondent, the General Manager of Railways stated that “the presence of children in the smoking compartments was accounted for by the fact that many parents travelling with their families specifically requested ’smoking’ seats.” This is a terrible indictment of such parents, and I suggest that action be taken to deal with such irresponsibility by at least prohibiting children from travelling in smokingxompartments. With the death toll from smoking far in excess of road fatalities, something ought to be done to shield children, both physically and mentally, from this menace. No-one has an instinct to draw foul air into his lungs—the natural instinct is the reverse—and this habit is instilled by pernicious example.—Yours, etc., PARENT. May 29, 1967.
