NEW HAREWOOD COURSE OPENED

The president of the New Zealand Golf Association (Mr J. Mercer) cut the ribbon on the first tee of the new 18-hole course at Harewood yesterday afternoon. The young Canterbury Freyberg Rosebowl player, D. R. Hope, was the first to hit off.

Only 10 years after its reformation, Harewood Golf Club now has a 36-hole course.

The president of the club (Mr R. S. D. Twyneham) said that the new course, the first designed in New Zealand by the course architect (Commander J. D. Harris), was a par 72, and 6540 yards long.

“The course is not quite ready, but because of the pressure of people wishing to play we decided to open It,” he said.

Mr R. W. Hope, a founder of the Harewodd Young People’s Club, paid a tribute to the work done for young players by Mr A. R. Blank.

The new course is next to the old one. The club house has been moved from its old position on the corner of Harewood and Pound roads to a place more/central to both courses.

Mr Twyneham praised the work done by club members and particularly the greenkeeper (Mr L. Hammond) In clearing the 100-acre block. The new course will not be two sets of 18 holes, but 36 holes in four nine-hole loops.
