Physicist Returns

Dr. G. D. Jones, a lecturer in physics at the University of Canterbury, returned to Christchurch yesterday after spending three months doing research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and visitir. universities and industrial firms in Britain and the United States. At the invitation of the physics department in the Hebrew University, Dr. Jones continued his collaboration with Dr. S. Yatsiv on research into the optical effects of light hydride impurity ions in the spectrum of fluorite (calcium fluoride) crystals containing rare earth impurities. This work was begun when Dr. Yatsiv and Dr. Jones were stationed in California. Dr. Jones said the highlight of the second part of his trip was the inspection of spectrographs and laser equipment. The University of Canterbury will acquire items in both fields in August, and he saw the equipment Which has been bought. Dr. Jones also visited universities and research projects whose work is related to that being done at the University of Canterbury.
