Changes Wanted In School Cert.

Various changes in the prescription for School Certificate were suggested at the annual conference of the Canterbury region of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association on Friday and Saturday.

The association passed three remits on the examination, which will be sent to the annual conference of the New Zealand P.P.T.A. next month. One of the remits said that English should not be a compulsory subject but that a prospective candidate had to have a satisfactory standard of core English.

The association supported the idea of an enlargement of core subjects, including English, social studies, general science, mathematics, commercial practice, music and physical education, to be followed for three years- by a school certificate candidate. Support was also given for the principle of single subject passes. “We expect the School Certificate examination will be abolished in time, but we do think it would be possible at the moment,” said Mr K. J. D,. Quinn, secretary of the region. / “The Minister of Education

(Mr Kinsella), has indicated that the new regulations for the examination will come into force next year. Therefore, we want to press our claims now for what we would like included in the prescription. All delegates favoured a change of some sort,” he said.
