Cathedral Dedicated

“We must get rid of any false ideas we may have of the Church as a 'Society for the Clergy,’ ” the Bishop of Nelson (the Rt. Rev. P. E. Sutton) told the congregation at the service of dedication of the Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson, yesterday. In his sermon to the congregation and invited guests, among them the GovernorGeneral (Sir Bernard Fergusson), the Bishop said that even the Reformers failed to bridge the vast gap between clergy and people. “The people still think of themselves as front-row spectators at something being said by a few professionals,” he said. “Today we are learning —Roman Catholic and reformed churchmen together —that the spectators must join the team at worship.” The first lesson was read by the Governor-General, who also unveiled a plaque commemorating the completion of the cathedral, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1925 by the then GovernorGeneral, Sir Charles Fergusson, Sir Bernard Fergusson’s father.

The second lesson was read by the Archbishop of New Zealand (the Most Rev. N. A. Lesser) who also pronounced the blessing.

The Bishops of Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin were also at the dedication service.
