TARGET TIMES

Tough For Swimmers (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The New Zealand swimming nominees for next year’s Olympic Games at Mexico City will have to reach “realistic” target times, probably based on performances at the 1964 Tokyo Games. The chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (Mr A. J. Donaldson) said on Wednesday that the target times would be set early next month and would be announced when the association’s games training squad was named.

“We have got to be realistic about the target times,” he said.

"From the start they are going to be tight and we don’t want to have to alter them before the nominations are made, probably in May of next year.” Mr Donaldson said the target figures would probably be based on performances at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games because these were the only comprehensive set of world times available. The N.Z.A.A.A. council will consider the target times at its meeting In Christchurch on June 6. The games training squad, expected to be about 50, will also be named at the meeting.

Close Flnod.—The Yorkshire and England cricket captain, D. B. Close, was fined £2O and had his licence endorsed by Leeds magistrates on Wednesday for exceeding the speed limit. Police said he drove his car at 55 miles an hour through a radar check in a 30 m.p.h. built-up area.
