Railway Teams Are Leading Badminton

Railway I established itself as favourite for the Canterbury Badminton Association’s A grade championship when it toppled last year’s winner, Christchurch, last night. After two rounds, Railway I and Railway II lead the nineteam field.

Although many of the individual contests were extremely close, • the team results were clear-cut. Railway I beat Christchurch, 6-2, and Railway 11, Canterbury Malaysian Students and Avonside all won with the loss of only one match. The surprise result of the night was the defeat of G. G. Ford (University) by last year’s junior champion, G. A. Miller (Railway II). Ford has been in good early-season form, but could do little right against the hard-hitting Miller. A triumph for youth against experience was the win of G. Ellis (Railway I) against D. B. Reid (Christchurch). Ellis maintained considerable pressure over his experienced opponent in the first set but Reid won back ground by drawing Ellis into the net in the second. Ellis, however, regained the upper hand with smashes to the corners Canterbury Malaysian Students, a new team consisting of three of last season's University side and the promising Miss C. Reay, had a successful debut, and gave promise of some spectacular badminton before the season is much older. Without the Canterbury women’s champion, Mrs B.
