Pipe Band’s Success
The Scottish Society Pipe Band-was congratulated at the annual meeting on being second in the A grade of the 1967 Dominion Pipe Band championships at Invercargill recently.
The band won the quickstep, in which it also took the honours for music. Drum Major A. Miller won the New Zealand champion staff flourishing title for the third time. The pipe major was quoted as saying that the present playing strength of the band was 18 pipers and nine drummers and it was obvious that there would be keen competition for places in the band to go to the 1968 Dominion championships at Wanganui.
Winners of the annual trophies were:— The N. Murphy trophy for the most improved piper in all aspects of band work, R. Taits: the N. Murphy trophy for the most improve drummer, T. Currie. Solo piping trophies: A grade, J. Waters; open grade, F. Spence.
Officers elected were:, president, Mr W. H. Mathieson; pipe major, Mr F. Annan; drum major, Mr A. Miller; pipe sergeant, Mr G. Burrows; pipe corporal, Mr P. Aitken; pipe lance-corporals, Messrs R. Lloyd and W. Beaton; drum sergeant, Mr J. Dingwall; drum corporal Mr A. Jemmett; drum lance corporal, Mr M. Fraser; management committee, Messrs F. Annan, A. Miller, J. Reader, J. Dingwall. G. Burrows, A. Smith, P. Blacklock, A. Jemmett, A. Gray, W. Beaton, A. Williamson, J. Bruce; secretary, Mr , J. Reader; assistant secretary, Mr W. Beaton; drill instructor, Mr A. Souter; bass section tutor, Mr J. Lloyd.
