Rugby League Selectors

Although players in the south zone team to meet Queensland in Christchurch on Sunday will be availabe for club games on Saturday the Canterbury Rugby League on Monday evening failed to agree on whether those in the curtain-raiser trial game could play for their clubs. The chairman (Mr D. C. Wilson) said that Marist would have almost its full back-line away, and Addington would lose five players if the trial teams were not allowed to play club football the previous day.

“There’s nothing to say players can’t play on both days,” said Mr W. Whitehead. The matter lapsed without a decision being reached. Minutes of the last meeting of the national council revealed that a team captain for the New Zealand touring team would be appointed, but captains for the other matches would be appointed “where necessary.” The council advised that any players not available for the Australian tour, beginning this month, would not be eligible to play in either game at the Show Grounds on Sunday. The referee for the Queensland game will be Mr J. Campbell (Wellington). Mr Campbell is coach and a selector of the Wellington representative team. Selectors—Selectors of Canterbury representative teams were elected as follows (conveners are members of the board of control): Senior reserve, Mr P. Yaxley (convener), Messrs D. Gardiner and J. Davies. Third grade: Mr L. R. Huston (convener), Messrs D. M. Kerr and W. Foster. Under-19: Mr D. Shearer (convener), Messrs B. L. Vesty and A. R. Kirton. Under-17: Mr J. Anderson (convener), Messrs L. Stickler and R. Woods.
