Golfer Seeks Change In Draw System

Inter-club golfers “think the social aspect has gone from the game” because two matches of the competitions are played on Sundays, Mr E. H. M. Richards (Hororata) told the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association on Monday evening. The players met one team in the morning and did . not see those players again for the rest of the day, he said. Mr Richards, a Woodward Cup and Canterbury Freyberg Rosebowl player, suggested a return to the system of about three years ago, when only one round of inter-dub competition was played each day. He was supported by Mr E. G. Batstone (Waitikiri), who said that competitions started early in the season and “by the time the season is half over, there is no interest in inter-club golf.” The secretary (Mr G. W. A. Green) pointed out that although, in theory, a match woulid be over quickly—foursomes start at 5-minute intervals—the club players following could be provided with very slow golf. Mr J. H. Dawson (Waimairi Beach): I suggest we send a questionnaire to clubs. This was agreed to, and the match committee was asked to draw up questions.

Club Accused Waimairi Beach “packed” its B team for a Simon Cup match against Rawhiti In the latest inter-club round, the Rawhiti club said in a letter.

Emphasising that it was not making an official complaint, and that its loss had not prompted the letter, Rawhditi said that Waimalri’s A team lost to the B side in the morning and the “top” team's players appeared for Waimairi B in the afternoon.

Mr Green read rule 4—“ no player shall play for more than one team In any one competition” —and produced result sheets which showed that two Waimainl A players did, in fact, play for the B team. “The rule has been broken and it is up to this association to take action,” said Mr A. C. Barr (Avondale). “The fact that the team broke the rule disqualifies it from that match.”

He moved, successfully, that the match committee should take action.

Grant.—A grant of £2O was made to the Selwyn area (the Patterson Cup area) for administering its competition. New Trophy.—Mr Green presented a trophy for competition in the presidents'* tournament.
