THIEVES BUSY AT WEEK-END

A large number of thefts and burglaries was reported to the Christchurch C. 1.8. during the week-end. A radiogram, a heater and crockery, valued at £3O, were stolen from a house in Belfield street on Saturday night.

The St Albans Post Office in Papanui road was broken into in the early hours of Saturday but as far as is known nothing was stolen. The sum of £35 was taken from a drawer of a bedroom of a house in Derrett place between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, and a transformer, valued at £l2, was taken from a garage in Troon place on Saturday night. While a party was in progress in a dwelling in Armagh street on Saturday evening, a record player, valued at £29, was stolen.

Other thefts included: £3 10s from a house in St. Martins road; £ll when a window of a house in Hands road was broken; money and property valued at £22 10s in Linwood avenue; and a transistor radio from Kerrs road. Wagon Wheel Hairdressers in a block of shops at the corner of Sparks and Halswell roads was entered on Thursday night and £1 was stolen. An electric iron valued at £7 was stolen from Halswell Furnishings and property valued at £53 12s 6d was taken from the Mortar and Pestle Pharmacy in the same building. A boy, aged 16, was apprehended in Bramwell street, Dallington, at 11 pun. on Saturday and was questioned about several burglaries in the area during the last two months.

A youth was arrested at New Brighton at 4 a.m. on Friday after a car, which had been stolen from Ashburton, was involved in an 80 mile-an-hour chase and rolled over.
