First British Satellite

A spokesman for the Goddard space flight centre at Greenbelt said that all experiments on the £2 million satellite had been turned on “and are working 0.K.” The experiments, which Involve analysis of the electron and gaseous content of the upper atmosphere, could result In improved weather forecasting and radio transmission. The 1981 b satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force base in California and was carried by an American four-stage Scout rocket into orbit 325 miles above the earth’s poles.
