Missionary’s Military Service Postponed
A man who told the No. 14 National Service Military Postponement Committee that he hoped to do missionary flying work in New Guinea or the Congo was granted a postponement sine die at a hearing yesterday. Alan Gordon Fergusson said that he was sitting a series of examinations to qualify as a C grade flying instructor and a licensed maintenance engineer. He had finished commerial pilot examinations and intended to spend three days each week as a flying instructor.
For the applicant, Mr A. F. Shaw said that Fergusson would be of more use overseas as a pilot who would do his own maintenance work than as a national serviceman. An application lodged by P. A. Appel on his own behalf was dismissed. The applicant told the committee that he needed a postponement because of financial troubles.
The committee comprised Messrs J. R. Williams (chairman), W. J. Moore (Crown representative), C. R. Thomas and H. F. Larsen (members). Eleven cases were heard and the following decisions made:—O. W. Evans, 12 months’ postponement; R. C. B. Fife, 12 months’ postponement: J. D. Kennedy: six months’ postponement; R. G. H. Thomson, 12 months’ postponement; M. W. Winter, six months’ postponement; P. M. Stewart, adjourned sine die; G. W. Dench, 12 months’ postponement; G. Pattison, ad-
journed sine die; H. G. Cockburn, adjourned sine die.
In the following cases no appearances were made and adjournments sine die were granted: dependants, N. W. Cave, G. Dempsey, D. J. Dickson, A. J. Greenhalgh, B. K. Hanrahan, G. M. Lindsay, J. L. McGill, K. C. Moore, S. D. Pemberton, D. R. Scott, G. J. Wright; students, D. J. Blackmore, J. N. Hurt, D. E. Fraser, A. J. Kerr, R. L. Pearson, D. M. Scott, T. A. Scott, K. L. Sterling, D. A.
