MANAGER OF QANTAS
Capt. Ritchie Appointed Captain R. J. Ritchie will become the chief executive and general manager of Qantas Empire Airways, Ltd., as from June 30, said the chairman of the company (Sir Roland Wilson) in Sydney on Monday. Captain Ritchie, who has been deputy chief executive and deputy general manager since 1961, succeeds Mr C. O. Turner, who is to retire. Mr Turner has had a long and distinguished period of service with the airline. Prior to final retirement Mr Turner will take extended leave. He has been invited to devote some of his future retirement to special advisory work for Qantas in fields where his special knowledge and experience would be of assistance.
Captain Ritchie began an active flying career in 1937 and joined Qantas as a pilot in 1943. In 1950 he became assistant operations manager, two years later he was appointed controller of technical development and in 1955 director of technical services.
In his capacity as deputy manager and deputy chief executive Captain Ritchie has played an important part in the evaluation and selection of new aircraft as well as in the general administration of the airline.
Both Mr Turner and Captain Ritchie have visited Christchurch in the past on airline business.
