HELP FOR STUDENTS
An appeal to Christchurch people to make more than than superficial offers of hospitality to overseas students was made by Mr Yunus Noor, of Malaysia, at an international evening attended by more than 350 overseas students.
The students appreciated the hospitality offered to them, but it should not only be superficial, Mr Noor said. A New Zealander giving a telephone number to a student saying “ring me up some time” was not enough. There was need for real interest to be shown through the making of definite arrangements. Mr Noor also said that it was the overseas students’ duty to mix with New Zealanders and *to allow them to understand us.” New Zealanders were involved in some self sacrifice in welcoming overseas students into their country, and the students should show some reciprocal sacrifices in making the efforts to mix. “It is our duty to go out pf our way and mix,” he said. If students did not they would be engaged only in taking from New Zealand and not contributing or acting as ambassadors of their respective home ceuntries.
