Bread And Butter Preferred To Rice
[New Zealand Preu Association)
WELLINGTON, April 14.
Japan was becoming an ever expanding market for primary produce as new eating habits became established in the country, said the new Japanese Ambassador to New Zealand (Mr Hanuni Takeuchi) on his arrival in Wellington tonight.
The younger generation in Japan preferred bread and butter to rice, he said. “Because of this, the market for primary produce must expand. It is up to New Zealand
if it is to get the lion’s share,” said Mr Takeuchi. He regarded it as a great honour to serve as Japan’s envoy in New Zealand. “My predecessor, Mr Kondo, spoke very highly of the people and the scenery, so it is with great expectations that I have come here.
“Japan and New Zealand are many thousands of miles apart but both belong to the area of the Pacific basin. “As eo-metnbers of the Pacific, Japan and New Zealand have a common interest in the peace and stability of the area. “I hope to do my part in bringing our peoples even closer together. For this I will need the co-operation of the Government and the people of New Zealand,” said Mr Takeuchi, “I hope you will give this to me as you did to Mr Kondo.”
Before Ms appointment to New Zealand, Mr Takeuchi was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Philippines, a post he took up in 1965. Earlier, he held senior position in the Asian, European and American affairs bureaux.
Mr Takeuchi will be joined by his wife and two children in July.
