YOUTHS THREW ROCKS
Two 18-year-old, unemployed Lyttelton youths who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, Lyttelton, yesterday, on charges of disorderly conduct, received a fine of £5O each; but for their age, both would have gone to prison, said Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, They were Michael Roger Gallagher and Peter Stanley Norris, both of whom pleaded guilty to throwing rocks at a Tunnel Authority vehicle parked at 1 a.m. with its lights on during a power cut on April 9. According to Sergeant G. B. Riach, a complaint was made about the rock-throwing and as a result the youths were found standing above the tunnel mouth at Lyttelton with a pile of rocks at their feet
MONEY IN DISPUTE Evidence was sufficient to substantiate the claim by Andrew Miller Wood, an able seaman from the Maori, that £5O found tn the possession of Michael Donald Allan, a workman since deceased, was his property, the Magistrate found. Both Wood and' Ernest McDonald AiMan.the father of Michael Donald Allan who was arrested on January 31 on a charge of the theft of £l2O from Wood but died before We case could be heard by a Magistrate, disputed ownership of the money involved. CASE DISMISSED A charge of tailing to clear a property brought by the Noxious Weeds Inspector against Mortimer McCarthy was dismissed by the magistrate. Appearing for the defendant, Mr M. J. Cashmere told the Court that McCarthy, who was almost 90 years of age, was one of Lyttelton’s moat dtetingulshed citizens, a man with an honoured career as a seamen, and a veteran of Scott’s Antarctic expedition. He had never appeared in Court. The property sited at Diamond . Harbour had been sold before the summons was sent. NOXIOUS WEEDS For falling to dear their properties of noxious weeds, the following persons were fined: Frank Laurence Fouids, £1; Donald Kerrison Jarvis, £1; Rex William Mercer, £10; Alan James and Joan Violet Maschek, £7; Charles John Barter, £l. Gordon Simpson Crowe was convicted. TRAFFIC OFFENCES Careless use: Lawrence Mark Ifcln, £B, and disqualified from driving for six months (no driving licence, £5); Raymond Kenneth Smith, £6, and disqualified from driving for three months. > Failing to report damage: Marie Ewart,' £5, and disqualified from driving for one month; Myra Te Alka, £4 (no driving licence, £4; and no warrant of fitness, £1).
