Post Office Charges

Sir,—Tai Tapu, a country township, is not eligible for rural delivery. The post office is closed daily from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m, at which time it is often convenient to collect mail, and if Saturday’s mail is not to be held over until Monday, it is necessary to rent a private box. The towndweller has mail delivered to his gate but we, who have to call at the post office for ours, have had our rentals increased by 50 per cent. Surely this is most unjust—Yours, SMALL INCOME. April 7, 1967. [The Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) replies: Anyone on the route of a rural delivery can obtain service on payment of the normal, fee, but extensions to the route are not made to serve people within one mile of a Post office. There is insufficient business at the Tai Tapu Post Office to justify more than one of a staff, so that a lunchhour closing is necessary. The rental increase from 10s a year to 15s is the first change to- this class of private box since 1920.”]
