The Road Toll
Sir,—Does “Phred” think of the road toll as some kind of a joke? He suggests that to cut down the road toll, drivers should be allowed to drive faster, with a higher danger to others, which would cause the road toll to double in a very short time. Even at speeds of 55 miles an hour some drivers do not seem to be able to control their cars, so what would it be like at 80 or 90 miles an hour? The only answer to driving offences is disqualification, which should be more effectively enforced. All drivers should be made to display their licence in the front window of their car, and this could be a sufficient deterrent to disqualified drivers who are tempted to drive.—Yours, etc., SOPHOCLES.
