Canterbury Softball Teams Beat Army

Canterbury men’s and women's softball teams both won, by widely different margins, their representative matches against the Army at English Park on Saturday. Two home runs by T. Smith gave the men’s senior team a well-merited 4-2 win, but both men’s teams played softball of a high standard to give a fitting climax to the season. The Canterbury women had no difficulty winning, 19-3, after five innings. The men’s teams were: Canterbury: K. Davis, S. Whittington, B. Waine, B. Chee, B. McGregor, G. Woods, D. Lanini, T. Smith, D. Chee and C. Reid. Army: R. M. Bennett, D. Hammond, E. G. Straus, W. T. Daviu, R. S. Seaman, R. Turner, H. Dickson, J. Eager, K. Evans and E. M. Rogers. Tight Fielding Sharp, tight fielding and economic pitching by Davis (Canterbury) and Bennett (Army) prevented runs in the first two innings. The Army third baseman and short stop. Seaman and Turner, caught and threw brilliantly to dismiss D. Chee and McGregor, Canterbury opened the scoring in the third innings after Army failed in spite of a good drive by Seaman. Smith hit the first of his home runs, a drive to the fence.

Woods scored next after good batting by D. Chee. Canterbury had a two run lead.

Army batters were showing more confidence at this stage against the pitching of Davis, and in the fifth innings loaded the bases. An opportune pitching change, however, with D. Chee replacing Davis, denied it runs when Chee struck out W. T. Davis and Bennett. With two down in its fifth time at bat, Canterbury made it 4-0 when Smith cracked his second home run. The next batter, B. Chee, followed suit, sweeping the ball to the fence. Army, making a late run in the seventh innings scored two glorious runs when Seaman pounded the ball over centre field to bring himself and Dickson home. Davis was brought to pitch again at this stage and stopped the Army rally with

two good strike-outs against Hammond and. Bennett. Canterbury did not need its last bat. Davis pitched well for Canterbury to record seven strikeouts and give three hits Ind one walk. D. Chee secured three strike-outs and allowed one walk. For Army, Bennett, who pitched the full game, struck out one and gave five hits. Toe Strong The women’s team was too strong for the Army team. Canterbury scored seven runs in its first Innings. The second innings produced home runs by N. Beale, B. Clark and K. Noonan, which brought tn a further five runs. A three-bagger by C. Mull ally opened Canterbury’s third innings, and from bunts and a hit by Clark, three runs were scored. Canterbury, still batting strongly, gained a three bagger by B. Makinson, and a further four runs in its fourth. Army tightened its fielding in Canterbury’s last bat and for the first time in the game Canterbury failed to score. Army had difficulty hitting the Canterbury pitchers, B. Makinson (for the first two innings) and H. Thyne (the last three), and only five hits were made during the game, one off Makinson and four off Thyne. Makinson gained one strikeout to Thyne’s two. Tight Canterbury fielding held Army scoreless in its first three innings Army scored its only runs of the game in the fourth, when P. McLean hit and advanced on errors which allowed I. Mills to base. W. Bennett hit well to score McLean, an overthrow scored Mills and Bennett came home on a hit by V. Beauchamp. West Coast Games At Greymouth, the Canterbury women’s senior B side, after taking a handy lead in the middle stages of its game against West Coast, succumbed to field errors. West Coast won, 15-14. Canterbury took the batting honours, nine hits to seven, and P. Hall was prominent both with the bat and fielding. Canterbury junior schoolgirls found its West Coast counter parts too strong and lost, 9-19. Results.—

Canterbury senior women 19, N.Z. Army 3; West senior

B women 15, Canterbury 14; West Coast junior schoolgirls 19, Canterbury 9.
