Boy Falls In River
A mother rescued her two-year-old son who had fallen in the Avon river on Saturday. She is Mrs C. H. Caldwell, of 398 Oxford terrace. Mrs Caldwell heard her daughter, Raylene, screaming about 9.45 a.m. She saw her standing on the river bank crying and jumping up and down. It was then that she saw her son, Michael, floating down the river on his back.
Mrs Caldwell jumped into the river and waded out to the boy. A woman motorist and Ken Anderson, aged 13, of Ohawe place, heard the girl’s screams and jumped into the river but Mrs Caldwell reached the child first.
The boy fell into the water when attempting to rescue a toy truck.
