North Road Congestion
The cars travelling south on the Main North road late yesterday afternoon were bump-er-to-bumper from about Kaiapoi into Christchurch, travelling in stops and starts. By about 5.15 p.m. when the jam was worst the queue of vehicles, including a number of specially chartered buses, stretched almost as far as Pinehaven, about a mile north of Kaiapoi. The traffic jam was at its worst in the Kaiapoi borough, where there were frequent halts. Once out of the borough the string of vehicles moved more freely, although at a very slow speed.
PRISONER CAUGHT
Barry James Richards, aged 27, a trusted prisoner, who escaped from Paparua Prison on Saturday morning, was arrested in a Sydenham hotel at 5.20 p.m. the same day. Richards was working alone on the prison farm as a shepherd when he escaped. The police were notified of his escape at 12.15 p.m. Police and dogs searched the area around the prison.
